Councillor Ron Beale is arguing for the sale of the Civic Centre, to get rid of debt, and urging KTC to be ‘open and transparent’ on the matter – It’s now time to sell off this liability of town civic centre (Keighley News, February 20) – which is his right, but as usual he is being selective with the information he puts in the public domain.

As he has a particular interest in this building, I am sure he has paid particular attention when it has been discussed at KTC meetings, and read everything in the papers, and so he will know there is a covenant on the building, which severely restricts its use.

This was the reason the police were having trouble selling it, and so were leaving it to rot, and no doubt KTC would have the same problem.

I believe the covenant also places financial conditions on the sale of the building, if the usage conditions are removed.

Either way, anyone knowing all of the facts can see the sale of the building would not be simple or the answer that Coun Beale claims it will be.

Indeed, it would lead to less use of the building, while the uncertainty of a sale hung over it, therefore causing a further reduction in income while overheads continue. Indeed, this may already be happening.

A sale would inevitably cause extra costs and could leave KTC with an outstanding debt and no asset or source of income to alleviate it.

In future, can I ask that Coun Beale is also ‘open and transparent’, and gives all the information when he writes to your paper, so everyone can have an informed opinion on his comments, as is their right.
