On Saturday, the Fairtrade Charity Dinner is at 7pm at Haworth Old Hall, with live music from Reubik and a quiz. The dinner costs £18 for three courses. Keighley Community Transport is laying on a shoppers’ bus from our area – that is Haworth, Stanbury, Oxenhope and Leeming – to the Keighley supermarkets for a trial period. Women’s World Day of Prayer is being held this year at St Michael’s Parish Church, Haworth, tomorrow at 2pm. The guest speaker will be Mrs Diane Wilson. The service has been prepared by the women of Egypt.

The little congregation at Haworth’s West Lane Methodist Church is to hold a coffee morning to coincide with a street collection in the village in aid of the Marie Curie Cancer Care charity. The coffee morning will take place between 10am and 11.30am on Saturday, March 29 in the communal lounge at Thornfield, Station Road, where a number of local Methodists live. Everyone is welcome to pop in.

The Worth Valley Young Farmers met week at The Three Acres Pub, to hear the club’s exciting involvement in the Fields of Vision project surrounding the Tour de France. The project, which was started by Worth Valley, aims to create nine images in different fields throughout the part of the route that crosses West Yorkshire. This will be done by burning, pressing, sowing and dying the grass. The club’s main project is on Miles Greenwood’s field in Stanbury, for which members have put ideas forward. We will keep you up to date on the project that could potentially be viewed by 3.5 billion people during the Tour de France and beyond. Oakworth Textiles will be running another beginner’s prodded rag rugs workshop above the Cobbles & Clay cafe on Thursday, March 13 from 10am-4pm, with an hour’s break for lunch. These sociable and enjoyable workshops give a very thorough introduction to the craft and topics covered include fabrics, cutting, prodding, hemming and finishing, planning, preparing a base and transferring a design. At the end of the day each participant will take away the little sampler that has been produced and another piece of hessian marked up ready for further practising. The price of £35 includes morning tea/coffee, lesson materials, use of equipment, a prodder and big-eyed needle to keep and some handouts. Worth Valley First Responders are local volunteers trained by the Yorkshire Ambulance Service, who respond to local emergency calls. Their aim is to assist and treat people who need assistance from the ambulance service until their care can be handed over to paramedics. More responders are needed now. Upper Worth Valley History Group’s first 2014 spring walk is a six miler from Cliffe Castle Museum entrance, Keighley, at 10.15am to Haworth. The 663 bus from Haworth at 9.40am would connect. Steven Wood and Ian Palmer invite you to join them for another series of free historical walks in the Haworth area on Wednesdays in March and April. All of this year’s routes are walks to Haworth from various points of the compass. Be prepared for cold and wet weather. Please wear walking boots, as several of the walks have some rough moorland terrain. Take a packed lunch and a hot drink. Next week’s walk on March 19 is Bingley to Haworth.

Stanbury and District Women’s Institute hold their March meeting on Monday at 7.30pm in West Lane Baptist Church. The speaker is Tim Brook on “From Fleece to Jumper” and the competition is a sheep in any medium. Members eat out occasionally and will be going to Craven College in Skipton for lunch tomorrow.

Haworth Riding For the Disabled is asking for voluntary help for a couple of hours each week on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday mornings from 10am-noon or on Saturdays from 9.15am-1.25 pm. Full training, insurance and unlimited tea and coffee will be given. Further information on (01535) 649448.

Haworth and Worth Valley Rotary Club meets at the Old Silent Inn Stanbury for a meal every Tuesday at 7.30 for 8pm. Usually they have a guest speaker. Recently they have been running a “contact the elderly project”. This is to invite the elderly to afternoon teas once a month on a Sunday afternoon. There will be a coffee and cake morning in aid of Oxfam to provide safe water for 100 people on Saturday, March 22, 10am-noon, at West Lane Baptist Church. There will also be a sale of pictures, picture frames and photo frames.

Six weekly sessions of Lenten Conversations will be held at the Church House, Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church from Wednesday, March 12, 7.30-9pm. CarelinK befriending scheme can provide support and companionship to older people who live alone and do not have many visitors. CarelinK can arrange for one of its volunteer befrienders to visit each week for a cuppa and a chat, or perhaps to take a short walk together. Volunteers are police checked and vetted. The Community Contact Point at 28 Changegate, Haworth, BD22 8DY, is normally open from noon-4pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, with no Saturday, Sunday or Monday openings. The contact point are asking for volunteers to help distribute the bi-monthly parish council newsletter – copies are free and are available from the Contact Point or online at haworth-village.org.uk. The Contact Point has a range of personal alarms, safe cans, and a range of free road safety information activity books, comics and stickers. Free low energy light bulbs are still available at the Contact Point. The Contact Point collect used computer printer ink cartridges, old mobile phones, and dead low energy light bulbs, which can all be recycled for the benefit of Manorlands Hospice.
