A student midwife delivered an impressive performance in a national competition.

Keighley woman Sarah Broadhead-Crofts – who is in the final year of a midwifery degree at Bradford University – has been highly commended in the Scholarship Awards, run by Cavell Nurses’ Trust.

“My previous profession was in banking and through my voluntary work I’d worked with women and come into contact with the National Childbirth Trust and midwives,” said Sarah, left.

“I wanted to give something back to my community and when I saw that through being a midwife you really had the opportunity to make such a difference and could improve lives for a long time, I was keen to be part of that.”

Nearly 30 student nurses and midwives competed in the awards, across five categories. The rigorous selection process included in-depth interviews by a judging panel featuring top figures in nursing, including Professor Lesley Page, president of the Royal College of Midwives.

Fourteen winners will be presented with awards by the Princess Royal during a ceremony in London on March 19.
