Lily weaves with a personal touch
A young designer is spearheading a new enterprise at an historic Bronteland textile firm.
Lily Tennant, 21, is at the helm of Trimmed With Love, which is producing bespoke hand-woven trims for the wedding market.
The company is part of Wyedean Weaving at Haworth, world-famous for its manufacture of uniform accessories for the military and police forces.
Lily, who graduated from university with a textiles innovation and design degree only last year, said she was delighted with the initial response to the operation.
“The feedback has been really positive,” said Lily, who specialised in hand-woven trim during her time at Loughborough University. “We went to the Harrogate Vintage Wedding Fair earlier this month, where the response was good. And now we are preparing for the National Wedding Show in Manchester this month.”
She said the trims, which are designed and manufactured at Wyedean’s Bridgehouse Mill base, are extremely versatile.
“They can be created for use on tables, menus, stationery, the dress, hat, the cake, the flowers – there are so many possibilities,” said Lily, who hails from Nottingham but now lives in Haworth.
“It’s a new idea for the wedding market. People hadn’t necessarily thought about it before.
“Customers can develop their ideas with us, selecting appropriate colours and materials to create a unique finish.”
Wyedean Weaving this year celebrates its 50th anniversary of ownership by the Wright family, but it has a history of trading dating back 150 years.
The business was previously known as Dalton Barton – the names of two Coventry ribbon weavers – and centred on a narrow fabric product range. But the new-look company began specialising in military uniform products in the 1960s.
Its assignments have ranged from producing waist sashes for the Queen to wear at the Trooping the Colour, to making mosquito-repelling fringes for the camels of the Jordan Army Cavalry!
