Keighley councillors have welcomed the completion of a project designed to encourage Keighley & Worth Valley Railway passengers to find out more about the railway’s historic surroundings.

Attractive information panels are now in place at all of the railway’s stations, as part of the Worth Exploring project.

Oxenhope Parish Council had led the scheme, which was financed by the Heritage Lottery Fund and South Pennines Leader cash. But Keighley Town Council supplied money to ensure the project could be extended to cover the K&WVR stations at Ingrow and Keighley.

Watch & transport committee chairman, Coun Graham Mitchell, said local historian Ian Dewhirst helped with the content of the information panels.

“These boards interpret the area around the stations to the casual visitor,” he explained. “The original aim was always to show people there’s more to see than just the stations and the railway.

“The idea is that if you increase the amount of time visitors spend here, you will probably increase the amount of money they spend, which is good for the local economy.”
