Keighley people are being invited to take up gardening for the first time.

Horticulture specialist Pippa Chapman wants to show them how to grow their own food from scratch.

She has been commissioned by Community First to work in community centres and schools across Keighley Central ward.

She wants to bring groups together, including families, to learn the basics of gardening.

People do not even need their own gardens – the aim is to use vacant plots around the town.

The £2,500 project is part of Let’s Grow Keighley initiative.

Pippa, from Those Plant People in Steeton, said: “It’s to help people who have never grown anything before.

“If they enjoy it they can hopefully move on somewhere bigger. A lot of people don’t want to take on an allotment.

“People bring their own containers and I have the seeds and small plants and vegetables.

One idea is to split a normal-size allotment into smaller plots for each person.

Pippa has already run two sessions at Keighley Healthy Living and plans two days of demonstrations in Airedale Shopping Centre.
