Cross Roads woman Vicky Swann has shown that winning awards is not the preserve of a few.

She scooped a double bronze in the World’s Original Marmalade Awards, which attracted entrants from across the globe.

“I was absolutely thrilled to win,” said Vicky, 35, who runs Hummingbird Preserves from her home.

“It’s a relatively new business and this was my first award.

“The success has given me a real confidence boost.”

More than 2,000 jars of marmalade from as far afield as Australia, Japan and US were entered in the awards, held at Dalemain in Cumbria.

Vicky took honours for her Seville & Cardamon and Three Fruit marmalades, which scored high marks for their appearance, colour, consistency, aroma and flavour.

She got her passion for making preserves from her grandmother.

“It’s long been a hobby of mine,” said Vicky. “I would sell the jars to colleagues and friends to raise money for charity and everyone commented on how nice they were.

“Now the hobby is a full-time business and I make jams, marmalades, chutneys and flavoured vinegars. I have a small orchard and I try to source all my ingredients locally.”

She supplies her products to some cafes and gift shops and sells them at hummingbird preserves.com. She will be attending several food festivals and shows this year, including the Bronte Vintage Gathering at Cullingworth, on May 10 and 11.
