An Oxenhope man given just six weeks to live last September is drumming up support for a night of entertainment in aid of Manorlands.

John Walton, 54, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last autumn.

Next month he is due to start an intensive bout of chemotherapy in Leeds. This will mean he loses all his hair so in advance of that he is being sponsored to have his head shaved, with the proceeds going towards the hospice.

The shave takes place at the Bay Horse pub in Oxenhope tomorrow at 7pm.

Mr Walton’s wife, Jennifer, said the night would be open to all and would also include a raffle, auction and tombola.

“We’d like as many people as possible to come along,” she said.

“Local businesses have been fantastic – they’re being so supportive in offering us prizes.

“It’s been amazing to see such a response in a short space of time. Everyone is going all out for John.

“He’s on painkillers at the moment but he’s such a strong fighter. He won’t give in.”

She said her husband received regular palliative care visits from a Manorlands nurse, adding that the hospice was always available to contact when she needed it.

Mr and Mrs Walton used to run the fish and chip shop in Mill Hey, Haworth.

Early last year they took over the Golden Hind chippy in Sun Street but sold the business after Mr Walton was diagnosed.
