Military history group the Men of Worth Project believes it has uncovered the identity of Keighley’s “unknown soldier”.
The amateur historians believe the picture published in last week’s Keighley News was of a heroic army captain.
Captain Godfrey Frank Mackwood Ling, who won the Military Medal and Bar, was killed in action in 1918.
The Keighley News last week printed the photograph, which had been found tucked into a Bible owned by former Keighley woman Mary Gibson.
Mary’s son Michael, who lives in Cheltenham, discovered the picture while sorting through his late mother’s belongings.
Men of Worth founder Andy Wade said the picture was “almost certainly” Godfrey Ling, whose father, like Mary Gibson’s father, was a Keighley doctor. Godfrey served in the 2/7th (Leeds Rifles) Battalion West Yorkshire.
Mr Wade compared Mary’s photograph with a picture of Godfrey printed in the Keighley News in June 1918, soon after his death.
The Men of Worth plans to carry out research into Captain Ling for a future article.
