Councillors have spoken out against the removal of four plastics recycling banks – including one at Cross Hills.

Craven Council has been told the bottle banks will be removed this week after recycling contractor Recresco said it could no longer provide the service due to spiralling costs. The Cross Hills bank is at the Hall Street car park.

“This is a vital service for residents,” said Glusburn ward councillor Coun Graham Beck. “Things like this are very important to local people.

“Residents of Cross Hills and Glusburn are good at recycling, and the bin at Hall Street car park is very well used.”

Coun Carl Lis, lead member for Greener Craven, said: “This is a real blow for our recycling scheme. People in Craven want to recycle and it is our job as a council to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.”

He added that the council was “working hard” to find an alternative.
