An Oxenhope resident with cancer has taken part in a lively fundraiser to support the village’s Manorlands hospice.
John Walton, 54, who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last September and given just six months to live, had his head shaved during the night at the Bay Horse pub in Oxenhope.
Mr Walton receives regular palliative care visits from a Manor-lands nurse, and is due to undergo an intensive bout of chemotherapy in Leeds.
The night at the pub also included a tombola, raffle and an auction, all featuring many prizes donated by local businesses and individuals. The event has raised at least £2,200 for Manorlands.
Mr Walton’s wife, Jennifer, said the occasion on Friday had been hugely successful, and was attended by about 150 people.
“It was fantastic,” she added. “When we set out we’d thought we’d manage to raise £500, or maybe £600.
“The support we’ve had has been unbelievable. Thank you to everyone who contributed.”
Mrs Walton and her husband used to run the fish and chip shop in Mill Hey, Haworth.
Early last year they took over the Golden Hind chippy in Sun Street, though sold the business after Mr Walton was diagnosed with cancer.
