The long-time organist at St Mary’s Church in Riddlesden has died at the age of 72.

Roger Lane, pictured, who taught science at Oakbank School for 25 years, had lived in Riddlesden for more than four decades.

Mr Lane’s widow, Pat, this week paid tribute to Manorlands, which cared for her husband after he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

A collection at Mr Lane’s funeral raised £1,200 for the hospice.

Mr Lane was born in Warwick-shire, and moved from Wiltshire to Riddlesden with his wife in 1972.

He learned to play the organ at the Royal Military College at Shrivenham, and began playing at the church soon after arriving in Riddlesden. He became the church’s permanent organist 35 years ago.

Mr Lane taught chemistry at Oakbank School, going on to become head of science before retiring in 1998.

He is survived by Pat, children Sarah and Nick and granddaughter Emily.

Pat this week described her husband as “kind, gentle and patient, and always calm and unflappable”.
