Young people in Woodhouse have repair-ed unwanted bikes to ride themselves.

The five youngsters worked with police community support officers to restore the cycles. They were then able to take the bikes home with new lights, puncture-repair kits and new ownership details stamped on the frames.

The Cycle-Recycle project ran at the Hainworth Wood Community Centre, with Neighbourhood Police funding. Following an appeal, several old bikes were donated, including some from police officers.

Centre worker, Sonia Evers, said: “Following a session on road safety, the young people were delighted to be able to take the bikes home.

“The success of the programme will hopefully be developed further, possibly linked to the Tour de France.”
