Internet giant Google invited people across the world to celebrate Charlotte Brontë’s birthday this week.
The popular search engine marked the novelist’s 198th birthday by redesigning its home page for Tuesday.
It created a ‘doodle’ that reshaped the Google logo with a scene from Charlotte’s masterpiece Jane Eyre.
The artwork showed governess Jane leaving Thornfield Hall, with the forbidding moortop mansion replacing the double ‘o’ of the word Google.
Charlotte, born in Thornton on April 21, 1816, was the eldest of the three Bronte sisters who became writers.
She died during pregnancy in Haworth on March 1, 1855. Charlotte is best remembered for Jane Eyre but also wrote the novels Shirley and Villette.
Lauren Livesey, a member of the museum’s curatorial team, said: “It was gratifying to see a multinational company like Google was celebrating Charlotte’s birthday.”
