A 72-year-old man is cycling to Rome to raise money for Manorlands.

Barry Hopkinson is tackling the gruelling ride in memory of his late wife, Carole, who was cared for at the Oxenhope hospice, in the hope of raising £20,000.

“Carole benefited from the wonderful care and expertise given at Manorlands – they were outstanding,” said Mr Hopkinson.

“She always had a smile on her face and felt so comfortable and secure there. I’m taking on this challenge to help Manorlands continue to provide this care so other patients in the future can benefit.”

He will set off on his epic journey – covering about 1,350 miles – next month and aims to return in late June. And he will then start to prepare for his next challenge – a coast-to-coast bike ride in August.

Mr Hopkinson is seeking support from businesses and will print sponsors’ logos on his shirt.

Manorlands-based regional fundraiser Hayley Ibbotson said: “Barry is taking on a huge challenge, not only by cycling all the way to Italy to support us but by aiming to raise such a huge amount of money for the hospice.

“I’d urge anyone who can offer Barry support in reaching his fundraising goal to contact me on 01535 640430 or visit Barry’s fundraising page at uk.virginmoney giving.com/team/Hopkinson2014.”
