The Haworth West Lane Baptist Amateur Operatic Company present “On the Air” at the church at 7.30pm on three dates: Wednesday, May 14, Friday, May 16 and Saturday, May 17, which coincides the the Haworth 1940s Weekend. This is a light- hearted look at the way we were in the 1940s with music drama and a bit of humour. The new bandstand in Haworth’s Central Park is completed and is free to use by any sort of group – not just bands. The official opening date will be on Sunday, June 22 when there will be various performances throughout the day and evening. This is a multi-purpose performance venue, with disability access and has electric power and lighting. This is a triumph by the hardworking bandstand committee, who have been fundraising and campaigning for many years. Haworth Brass Band rehearse on Monday evenings at 7.45pm in the band room above the Fleece Inn in Main Street. It currently needs more brass and percussion players to make up a full complement of 27 players. It is about a dozen short, so there are vacancies for almost all positions in the band. The band has an illustrious 160-year history, a huge music library and many top-of-the-range brass instruments that can to loaned to members or would-be members of the band. Stanbury and District Women’s Institute had an entertaining evening provided by the two ladies from “GiGi” at their April meeting. First the history of scarves as an adornment was explained and then the versatile nature of a scarf which can be worn and tied in so many different ways was demonstrated. A large selection of scarves, bags and jewellery were available afterwards for sale. Future plans for members include playing croquet, a meal at The Wetherby Whaler, a visit to Margaret Wooler’s garden at Carleton and a visit to Dunham Massey in Cheshire. Members of Wadsworth WI will be visiting Stanbury at the May meeting.

The 17th Bronte Vintage Gathering will take place in Flappit Fields off the B6144 between Haworth and Cullingworth on Saturday, May 10 and Sunday 11, in aid of Sue Ryder at Manorlands. Since 1998 £310,000 has been raised at this event. More details nearer the time.

The Friends of the Brontes’ Church is an organisation formed two years ago with the aim of raising funds for the upkeep and restoration of Haworth Parish Church. It arranges various social events and membership is open to all – not just church members. The Haworth and Oxenhope District Bridleways Group membership subscriptions for 2014 are now due as follows: senior £8, junior £4, family £12. Membership brings entitlement to a wide range of discounts in local stores. Meetings are held monthly, at the Old White Lion Hotel, Haworth at 8pm, preceded by a junior meeting at 6.45pm. The group exists to safeguard our local bridleways and holds events to highlight these and help to raise funds for their protection and extension. As April draws to a close, can the general public, horse riders, dog walkers and cyclists please be aware of the runners taking part in the annual Bunny Run races around Penistone Hill Country Park every Tuesday evening throughout the month of April. From 6.45-8pm about 300 runners will be taking part in the three-mile races from the start at the entrance to Dimples Lane Quarry, with entries taken at the Old Sun Hotel. Haworth Tennis Club has held its annual general meeting. I am delighted to have been re-elected as chairman and honourary secretary. Members please note that subscriptions are now due. The court locks have been changed, so the new key is purple, which can be exchanged for last year’s red key on renewal of membership. A club social afternoon has been planned for Sunday, from 2-5pm. Hopefully, this will take place on every last Sunday of the month during the summer playing season. Members, please try to be there to make it a success. As many as possible renewals of memberships will be done that day. No-one may book a court that afternoon.
