A former village Co-op store that had stood empty for years has been given a new lease of life.

The historic building in Station Road, Steeton, has been transformed into a beauty and massage salon.

And many of the original features from the premises have been preserved.

The building served as the Co-op from the early 20th century until the 1960s, after which it had numerous uses, ranging from offices to a hairdressers.

It had stood derelict for about seven years until opening in its new guise, as The Beauty Nest.

Owner Christine Wilson, who lives in Steeton, said: “Before I bought the building it had got into a very bad state of disrepair and looked unsightly.

“I believe I’ve restored it to a very high standard, and I have taken a great deal of effort to preserve its character in accordance with the conservation area.

“The front windows have been changed but I have the original old Co-op window, which I will restore and display, and have kept original features, including stonework.”

Miss Wilson, 29, has photos of the building from when it opened as a Co-op in 1906.

“Lots of people who have called in to have a look at the place remember it when it was the shop,” she said.

“There is a lot of history here.”

She has decorated the salon on a swallows theme – hence also the name of the business – in tribute to her late grandparents, whose surname was Swallow.

They lived in Steeton for the final decades of their lives.

The salon will be officially launched on May 10, featuring demonstrations, a raffle, offers and the introduction of a loyalty card scheme.
