A council committee chairman has thanked his colleagues for their help in securing a range of improvements for Keighley.

Councillor Graham Mitchell, of Keighley Town Council watch and transport committee, delivered an update on this body’s work at the 2014 annual town meeting.

He highlighted £3,000 worth of funding allocated by the committee for a new bus shelter at Windsor Road in Oakworth. He also drew attention to £2,500 worth of committee funding for an electric car charging point in the Scott Street car park.

Coun Mitchell added the committee had continued to provide or support important services during the past 12 months, including 60 grit bins, a Christmas Day free bus service, a summer Sunday bus service and staffing for the Oakworth Police and Community Contact Point.

“We are good at lobbying and actions by this committee in the past 12 months include a bus service diverted to pass the police station in Royd Ings Avenue, additional security fencing in Morton Cemetery and vegetation clearance on the Airedale Greenway,” he said.

He acknowledged one project – a scheme to bring a daily community rail service to the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway – has been shelved. This had been a joint initiative with Oxenhope and Haworth parish councils.

Coun Mitchell said: “It’s time has not yet come. I think it will happen but I may have gone to the great council chamber in the sky before it does.”
