Two Keighley district groups that successfully applied for £500 each in a community grants scheme last year are urging other organisations to bid for cash.

Strike Taekwondo and Airedale Hockey Club were among 160 applicants to win support from the Skipton Building Society Grassroots Giving project.

Stuart Blake, junior development manager at the hockey club, said: “The funding has enabled us to allow newcomers to have a couple of free training sessions and will ensure that, come the new season, we have plenty of qualified coaches in place to make sure our junior section keeps growing.

“We are calling on other community groups across the region to take advantage of the opportunity Grassroots Giving offers.”

Strike Taekwondo, a martial arts club for young people, has used its funding to help buy a new electronic scoreboard.

Roy Prenton, for the Skipton Building Society, said applications are now open for this year’s round of grants. “We have set aside £40,000 to give to grassroots organisations around the country, with the public deciding which causes win their share of the funds in November,” he added.
