A host of organisations have signed up for an event to celebrate Armed Forces Day in Keighley on June 28.

The event will combine a half-hour service in the Town Hall Square and a family fun day in Cliffe Castle Park.

Former servicemen Andrew Spence, of Keighley, is organising the day with the town’s Royal British Legion and cadet units.

Mr Spence said air cadets would demonstrate drill and help with marshalling, sea cadets would provide a barbecue and face painting, and Army cadets would give fieldcraft demonstrations.

The Northwest 101st Airborne re-enactment group will supply Jeeps, a military truck, a Dodge command car and possibly an M3 A1 half-track.

There will also be World War II equipment including military trucks displayed by historic equipment collector David Shackleton, along with an old Green Goddess fire engine.

The Yorkshire Regiment recruitment team will provide an inflatable assault course, military vehicles and possibly a paintball shooting range.

Also attending will be the Skipton Royal British Legion Band, the Salvation Army, service people’s charities SSAFA and Help For Heroes, the St John Ambulance and the Home Guard.

Mr Spence was pleased with the reaction he had had, including several businesses who had agreed to donating food.

He added: “At Cliffe Castle we will be having various arena events, such as a tug-of-war competition between the cadets, drill demonstrations and a pyrotechnics display.”

The day begins at 10.15am in Town Hall Square with the raising of the flag and a short reading.

The Cliffe Castle activities will be officially opened at 11am by the Deputy Lord-Lieutenant of West Yorkshire, and will run until 5pm.
