Allotment day success in Braithwaite
Plans to set up a community allotment in Braithwaite are forging ahead following a successful launch day.
Dozens of local people went along to the activity day last Saturday at the site off North Dean Road.
They took part in activities like foraging, fire pit cooking, bird box building and planting.
Several people volunteered to help build and plant the large plot on the existing Keighley Town Council allotment site.
The project, supported with a £9,900 Big Lottery Awards For All grant, is being led by community worker Pip Gibson.
She said planned activities included vegetable growing, a community shelter, outdoor cooking, a reading circle, a bird garden and a fairy glade.
It said: “We let people see the draft plans for the allotment to feed in their own ideas. We had lots of enthusiasm from people.
“Some wanted to donate their waste for composting, and others said that once vegetables were growing we could have local produce stalls.
“We want the allotment to be an open-air community space. You can do just about anything there.”
Some of the volunteers will now form a steering committee, and others will attend action days through the summer to work on the site.
