WORK will start next month on a £60,000 scheme to install new gas mains through the centre of Silsden.

Over 200 metres of metal pipeline in Kirkgate will be replaced with a plastic alternative.

A section of the street between the Bolton Road and New Road junctions will be closed – and traffic diverted – during the work, which is due to start on August 4 and take about four weeks to complete.

Northern Gas Networks said businesses would remain open as normal and access would be maintained for the public.

Customer operations area manager, Ian Cunningham, said: "In advance of the work taking place letters are being sent to residents, businesses and stakeholders and we are door-knocking in the area to help ensure people are aware.

"We would like to take this opportunity to apologise in advance for any inconvenience this essential work may cause."

The company is also staging a public forum, at Silsden Methodist Church hall tomorrow, July 10, from 5pm to 7pm, to outline the scheme and answer questions.
