TOM Moses’ participation in the Commonwealth Games road race on Sunday kicks off a series of high-profile competitions for him.

The Oakworth rider is thrilled to be donning the England vest for the first time but admits the race is just one of a number of big events that he is preparing for.

He said: “Obviously the Commonwealth Games means a lot to the general public but, in terms of cycling, while it’s a big race, it’s just one of several.

“Also coming up is a big one-day race in London, then I go to America for the USA Pro Challenge, which is a massive race, and then there is the Tour of Britain.”

Moses does not know the exact make-up of the six-man team which will represent England in Glasgow on the 168km circuit, though one of his fellow riders is set to be Burley-in-Wharfedale’s Scott Thwaites.

Sir Bradley Wiggins was originally named in the squad for the event but has since pulled out.

Moses said: “It’s great to get the call up for the England team for the Glasgow games. It is pretty close to being a home games, so it is pretty special.

“I had a strong start to the year before I backed off a bit in order to prepare for the second part of the season, starting with the Commonwealth Games road race.

“On paper we should be one of the strongest teams. My role will be to work for the others.

“Out of the eight guys (in the squad), six are World Tour riders so I will be looking to do a good job and to get as much experience as possible.”

The venue holds good memories for the former Oakbank School pupil, who expects Australia and New Zealand to be strong contenders.

He finished third under-23 rider when the National Championships were held there last year.

Meanwhile, Moses is looking forward to competing for his Rapha Condor team across the pond next month when they enter the USA Pro Challenge.

Featuring 16 of the best cycling teams in the world, the event takes place in the Colorado Rockies. The seven-day stage race travels 550 miles from Aspen to Denver.

Moses said: “It’s one of the biggest races all year and the team have done really well to get into that level. Cycling at high altitude will be a real test but I’m looking forward to the experience.”
