SOCIAL club members who saddled up to raise cash for Manorlands have handed over a £1,500 cheque.

Twelve people – several of them over 70 – took it in turns on exercise bikes at the Cross Hills club, in front of a big screen showing the Tour de France as it raced through the area.

The members were sponsored per minute and completed half-hour sessions.

Funds were boosted with a tombola and bike raffle.

Organiser Anita Robertson said: “This was a great team effort by everyone involved at the social club and we are grateful to all those who sponsored our team and local businesses which supported the raffle and other activities.”

Andrew Wood, a Manorlands-based Sue Ryder fundraiser, thanked the club and said Tour-related activities had brought in about £17,000 for the Oxenhope hospice.

He added: “The Cross Hills event is another great example of people really getting behind the Grand Depart and helping a worthy cause in the process."
