STRANGE characters will be lurking in gardens and public places across neighbouring villages this weekend – but there's no cause for panic.

Over 50 figures, created by villagers, are expected to be dotted around Kildwick and Farnhill for the second annual scarecrow festival.

The event begins tomorrow (Aug 15) and culminates with a family fun day at the White Lion pub on Sunday.

Proceeds from the festival will go to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and to Manorlands, the Oxenhope Sue Ryder hospice.

People are challenged to spot as many of the scarecrows as they can, with entry forms available from the pub.

Landlord David Townend said: "The festival brings the community together and creates a really positive spirit.

"Last year's event was almost as busy as Kettlewell's famous scarecrow festival, and this year it promises to be even bigger.

"There's been a lot of support from local businesses, which is tremendous.

"Organisers have done a great job. The pub just acts as host, with it being a community focal point."

Sunday's fun day – which begins at 2pm – will include a barbecue, stalls, a raffle, bouncy castle and a visit from the Lion Learners, who take animals to events and into schools and care homes.

A prize presentation will take place at 5pm.
