KEIGHLEY Town Council is funding a disability sports club for the third year running.

Town mayor Graham Mitchell went along to the club at University Academy Keighley to present this year’s cheque for £5,000.

He met members of the club, who have learning disabilities, during one of their weekly sessions.

The club is one of several sports sessions run every Wednesday at the school, in Beechliffe, by Bradford Disability Sports and Leisure (BDSL).

The club was renamed Keighley Town Council Disability Academy when the funding began in 2012.

The money enabled BDSL to successfully apply for a £150,000 grant from the National Lottery to fund academies in Keighley and Bradford for four years.

Coun Mitchell said: “I am delighted to support this Keighley group of young disabled athletes.”

One of the Academy members, James Crossley, will represent Great Britain in the Special Olympics World Games in the USA next year, along with fellow BDSL athlete Chris Woodhead.

Haworth, Stanbury and Cross Roads Parish Council recently presented Chris with £250 towards the cost of taking part in the World Games.
