VISITORS to Keighley Campus Leeds City College next month face extermination — from a full-sized replica of a classic TV show’s intergalactic baddie.

A dreaded character from science fiction series Doctor Who will be on hand to greet them at the doors during the premises’ open evening on November 12.

Derek the Dalek will meet visitors in the campus atrium during the evening, though guests will be relieved to know he is on a mission to educate not exterminate.

A college spokesman said: “Derek is a full-sized theatre prop, kindly on loan to us from Q20 Theatre Company.

“Following a recent upgrade, he now walks and talks — he is remote-controlled and has a radio mic and dalek voice encoder, enabling the operator to communicate with humans in real time.

“He can also spin on the spot, move in any direction, and can move his head and eye stalk.

“Derek will be one of a number of attractions showcasing our STAR Centre, as part of the wider campus open evening running from 5pm to 7pm.”

People will be able to tour the STAR Centre, visit the mission control simulation and ‘cosmodome’, and dress up as an astronaut in the planetary landscape section.

The evening will feature activities and demonstrations from each campus curriculum area, including media makeup students showing off their skills.

The new 2015 to 2016 further education course guide will be available for visitors, alongside information about how to apply for courses starting next September.

There will be plenty of car parking, so no need to take your Tardis.
