On Saturday, St James’ Church hosts a choral concert with guests The Rhymney Silurian Male Voice Choir, from South Wales. The choir has a high reputation in international competitions and has made CDs. The event begins at 7pm and is open to everyone. Tickets cost £5 on the door.
Another of the popular craft fairs takes place at the Old Bronte School Rooms on Saturday and Sunday, from 10am to 4pm both days, with a selection of handmade gifts and crafts. Admission is £1, including a hot drink. Visit haworthcraftfairs.co.uk for details.
Haworth’s Main Street will host two Hallowe’en parades this weekend, both beginning at 3pm. Saturday is Dragon Day, with a princess riding her giant dragon and a parade led by the silly wizard. On Sunday it’s the Parade Of Ghouls, when everyone in spooky outfits can join the parade.
The Keighley & Worth Valley Railway stages its annual Beer and Music Festival from today until Sunday. Once again the exhibition shed at Oxenhope will be transformed into the main festival site with a 60ft bar including local breweries and a stage where more than 25 acts will perform from tomorrow lunchtime until Sunday teatime. Hallowe’en trains will run on October 31, and tickets must be pre-booked as this is quite a restricted service. There will only be two trains in steam, with approximate departure times from Oxenhope at 6pm and Haworth at 6.10pm. There is another train leaving Oxenhope at 8pm and Haworth at 8.10pm for scarier journeys! Prices are £15 for adults and £8 for children aged three to 15. Children under three travel free but those seats cannot be reserved. Santa Special trains are still open for bookings, but some days are already full. All tickets must be pre-booked. They run on November 29-30 and December 6-7, 13-14, 20-21 and 24. Next week sees a daily service resume for the school holidays. Haworth Cricket Club, with many players from Cross Roads, had some success in the 2014 season. Two first team players received trophies at the Craven & District Cricket League dinner last week. Dan Trowers received the Mewies Fielding Trophy for taking 14 catches and three run-outs. And Jamie Rowell netted the Garbutt Bowling Trophy and the Frank Surgener Trophy for the CDCL all-rounder. Jamie’s bowling figures were 99.2 overs with 32 wickets taken for 313 runs, at an average of 9.78 runs/wicket. To achieve the best all-rounder tag his batting stats were 538 runs, with an average of 38.5 runs per innings. Congratulations!
Haworth, Oxenhope, Lees & Cross Roads Gardeners and Allotment Holders Association is holding its annual meeting on November 13 at Parkside Social Club in Butt Lane, Haworth, at 7.30pm. Members and non-members are welcome.
Haworth’s second Steampunk Weekend takes place from November 21-23. As well as splendid Victorian-based costumes, with basques, goggles, top hats and watches, there will be music too. There will be a Burlesque evening at Parkside Social Club on November 21, and on the Saturday there is a band night, with three bands performing. Both events are in aid of Manorlands hospice. There will also be Steampunk fashions being paraded up and around Haworth all weekend as well as Steampunk fairs, where clothes and accessories can be bought. Lees Methodist Church stages its popular monthly Cafe Church at 1pm on Sunday in the church hall. The service will be led by the Rev Nigel Ogley. There will be no 10.30am service.
