AN ORGANISATION that is no longer involved in a scheme to turn Haworth Fire Station into a community safety facility has stressed it never committed itself to backing the project.

The Keighley News reported last week that both Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team and the police had “pulled out” of the initiative to salvage some form of community facility from the planned closure of the fire station.

But speaking this week, search and rescue team leader Les Wilson said: “In order to withdraw or pull out of something you need to be in it in the first place, and at no point did we commit ourselves to this.

“We did discuss the project among ourselves but we decided we didn’t want to be involved.”

Councillor John Huxley, of the Worth Valley Joint Transport and Emergency Services Committee, said he was happy with the clarification.

“We had wanted them to get involved and we had been consulting with them during a period of about 18 months,” he added. “I went to Mytholmroyd to meet them and they came to Haworth to meet me. However, they have now withdrawn their interest.”

Haworth Fire Station is due to be closed on December 31.
