The exhibition of Silsden’s Story In The Great War, first shown at the town hall in August, has been on display at Bradford Mechanics Institute, following an invitation by the city’s First World War group. Chairman, Patricia Restorick, described the display as inspirational, and said the many visitors had been greatly moved by the stories of village life during the 1914-18 years. The professionally-designed banners from the exhibition will be shown again in Silsden during Remembrance weekend at a coffee morning in the town hall on November 8, organised by Silsden Local History Group.

A hundred years after the outbreak of the First World War, the Cobbydalers have produced an illustrated, 16-page newspaper featuring memories from that period. There are features on Dr John Purcell, the man who was responsible for the formation of the football club, the Silsden footballers who died at the front, and also the skipper. There are letters sent from the front by soldiers who later died, or from their comrades. There is a match report on the 1914 Keighley and District Cup Final and the history of Silsden AFC. There are features on the Bancrofts of Silsden, the Red Lion, Silsden Post Office and Jackson’s Taxis. There are also articles on the two main industries of Silsden, clog making and weaving, and the living conditions of the workers. The Silsden Herald will go on sale for one penny (£3 in today’s money). All proceeds will go to the British Legion Poppy Appeal. The football team will honour all those who fought in the Great War when Silsden Town Band will play songs from the war, backed up by members of Skipton Rock Up and Sing Choir, from 1pm to 2pm on November 8. Prayers and readings from the local clergy and British Legion will be said. The service will end with a rendition of the football hymn Abide With Me. There will be a display of Silsden in the First World War and refreshments will be served. The North West Counties League game between the Cobbydalers and 1874 Northwich will take place at 3pm. Before the match, the respective captains will lay a wreath on the match ball. This will be followed by a minute’s silence. There will be a commemorative matchday programme.
