YOUNGSTERS and adults joined forces for a "clean up Keighley" initiative.

They teamed up to get rid of litter and potentially dangerous items of rubbish in Devonshire Park and Utley Cemetery as part of a day of action arranged by the Madinah Mosque, in Spencer Street.

The mosque is affiliated to the UK Islamic Mission, which held a national community action initiative on the same day last Sunday. (Oct 26)

Adnan Mehmood, head of community relations for the Madinah Mosque, said: "We joined the local scouts group to take part in the clean up.

"Devonshire Park in particular was extremely dirty, and we found many smashed bottles in the children's playground.

"Members of the mosque, along with 4th Keighley Madinah Scouts Group, spent the day litter picking. We hoped to raise awareness of the importance of cleanliness within the community.

"It was a great turnout. We at the mosque hope to use this as a springboard and to make it into a regular occurrence across the community."

Mr Mehmood said he wanted to remind people that the Madinah Mosque will be holding an open day on November 16 from 10am to 3pm.

"We would like our community to join us and see what happens inside our mosque," he added. "They will be able to watch how we pray, and we'll be having a three-course meal provided by the mosque."
