AIREDALE Hospital is going green.

Three new boilers and a combined heat and power unit have been installed at the Steeton site as part of energy efficiency improvements.

The upgrade is the final stage of a programme which has also seen the replacement of 2,800 lights and changes to the ventilation systems in the operating theatres.

David Moss, assistant director of estates at Airedale NHS Foundation Trust, said the new heating system – which replaces a 40-year-old one – would generate significant financial savings and reduce the hospital's carbon footprint.

"The new infrastructure is a more energy efficient way of heating the hospital – we are taking advantage of advances in technology to provide a better environment for our staff and patients," he added.

"The latest installations are expected to save around £500,000 a year, before capital repayment, which will be reinvested in improving services."
