WEST Yorkshire's Police and Crime Commissioner has condemned recent violent incidents in Keighley as "totally unacceptable".

Mark Burns-Williamson said he had been reassured by the Deputy Chief Constable that proactive work was ongoing to identify the perpetrators and prevent further attacks.

He spoke out this afternoon as investigations cointinue into a series of separate incidents in the town on Mischief Night and Bonfire Night.

A fire engine had its windscreen smashed, a baby was injured after an attack on a family by a stone-throwing gang in Lund Park and Keighley Fire Station itself was targeted by yobs, forcing brigade bosses to close the site and temporarily move the crews and appliances to the police station in Royd Ings Avenue.

Mr Burns-Williamson said the police were working with the fire service and Bradford Council to tackle the issue and implement preventative measures, such as new CCTV in Lund Park, Highfield and Lawkholme.

He adedd: "School liaison officers, local faith leaders and residents have been working to encourage witnesses to come forward and discourage further disorder.

"I am also aware that more officers, including special constables, have been deployed into the area to reassure residents and conduct house to house enquiries.

"I know how much this has affected the local community. I have heard and listened to the voices of those who have contacted me.

"I will continue to take a keen interest in this over the coming days and weeks to ensure that those in the affected communities see action taken to make them feel safer."

He said anyone with information about the incidents should contact Bradford District CID on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
