REMEMBRANCE Sunday brought us both sides of the coin.

First, I would like to thank all members of the public who gathered in the Town Hall Square to remember the fallen on Remembrance Sunday. I have been on the town council since 2007, and never have I seen so many attending this service to remember the fallen of our borough.

This was a special day for all to remember lost loved ones, some whom we never met but owe them our eternal thanks for paying the ultimate price for our freedom.

100 years is a long time from the start of the First World War, and it’s a testament to all who gathered to show their respect. We will not forget the sacrifice made by so many in both world wars and in more recent conflicts, where our men and women are being put in harm’s way to defend our freedom.

On the other side of the coin, we had an incident where a veteran was attacked on his way to remember his fallen colleagues. This is something we must not allow to happen again. I call on the Imams of all the mosques to ensure the people responsible for this cowardly act are brought to justice. Remember, these veterans fought for the freedom of all, not just this country. Some things are sacred and respect for all can’t be ignored or be left to a few.
