AN ARCHAEOLOGY project on Rombalds Moor has failed to win a top prize in this year’s English Heritage Angel awards.
Carved Stone Investigation (CSI) was among four projects shortlisted for the Best Rescue of Any Other Type of Historic Building award.
CSI, run by development agency Pennine Prospects, was beaten to the prize by Inayat Omarji who carried out the rescue of All Souls’ Church in Bolton.
Pennine Prospects this week tweeted its congratulations to the CSI team for being shortlisted from 400 entrants in the annual awards scheme.
CSI involved a dedicated team of volunteers carrying out archaeological work on the moors above Riddlesden, Silsden, and Ilkley.
The volunteers were trained archaeological surveying and recording techniques, then over three years charted the condition of almost 500 prehistoric carved stones .
Although these carved stones are unique and of international importance and many are registered on the National Heritage List for England and English Heritage at Risk Register, their location makes them vulnerable to the elements and human interaction.
