Gerry and the Hatricks is a big swing and jazz band, 17-strong, formed in Keighley last year by John Large. It gave its very first concert in Oakworth on October 4, with vocalist Michaela Smith. The next concert will be at Haworth Parish Church tomorrow at 7.30pm. Haworth West Lane Baptist Amateur Operatic Society stages its annual Gilbert and Sullivan production from Monday until the following Saturday. This year is the 50th anniversary double bill with HMS Pinafore and Trial By Jury. Rehearsals are in their final stages, with Michael Lofthouse directing and Pamela Dimbleby directing the music. Tickets are £10 and £5 for children, with £8 tickets for the over-60s for the Monday and Saturday matinee. At the time of writing this column, tomorrow’s performance is sold out, but tickets for the other performances are still available, although selling fast!

Haworth Brass Band is still seeking brass and percussion players to upgrade from 14 players to a full band of 26. Good instruments are available on loan. The band rehearses above Keighley Civic Centre (entrance via Scott Street) every Monday at 7.45pm. Haworth and Worth Valley Rotary Club meets at its new venue, Newsholme Manor, for a meal on Tuesdays at 7.30pm for 8pm. The club has moved from the Old Silent at Stanbury. There is usually a guest speaker. The Rotarians have recently been running a ‘contact the elderly’ project. This is to invite the elderly to afternoon teas once a month on a Sunday afternoon. The organiser, Hilary Wharton, is seeking some volunteer drivers to help. Call 01535 647531. They would only be required three or four times a year, mainly in the Haworth area. CarelinK befriending scheme provides support and companionship to older people who live alone and do not have many visitors. CarelinK can arrange for one of its volunteer befrienders to visit each week for a cuppa and a chat, or perhaps to take a short walk together. Volunteers are police checked and vetted. Sequence dancing takes place at Parkside Social Club, Butt Lane, Haworth, every Wednesday, from 8pm to 10.30pm. There is live music and a bar. It is a marvellous sociable group for all ages. The dancing is fun, and newcomers are made welcome. Some of the dances are easy to pick up, while others are more challenging. We are looking for people to join teams for snooker, dominoes (3s and 5s) and pool, including a new ladies’ team. Beginners are very welcome. Supper is provided for players.
