DOZENS of people took part in a "Memory Walk" through Keighley as part of a campaign to help people with dementia.

Around 70 participants carried out the five-kilometre walk, beginning in Town Hall Square and taking in Devonshire Park and Cliffe Castle Park, before finishing at Cliffe Castle Museum. Three-year-old Jude Kelly, walking for his great grandma, was the youngest involved, while the eldest was 83-year-old Dilys Wigglesworth of Riddlesden.

Also present was Paul Smithson from the Alzheimer’s Society. He said: "I was really impressed with the age range of walkers with the youngest being three and the oldest being 83, and I got the impression that everyone enjoyed themselves."

The October 25 event was organised by Dementia Champions Sandra Kelly and Maggie Marsden as part of the Dementia Friendly Keighley initiative.

In a statement after the event, they said: "We would like to thank everyone who took part, especially the mayor of Keighley Councillor Graham Mitchell for lending his support and walking with us and also MP Kris Hopkins for sounding the klaxon to get us on our way.

"Special thanks also to Norwood House Nursing Home for providing refreshments to the walkers and for making a donation to the fund, and also to the staff of Cliffe Castle Museum for their hospitality. We also received great support from the Alzheimer’s Society.

"We are hoping to have raised in the region of £1,200 for services to support those living with dementia in our community. This is just a start though, and the campaign to make Keighley a more dementia friendly town will go on.

"Anyone wanting to get involved or just to find out more about dementia and the services available can contact us via the Keighley Healthy Living office."
