KEIGHLEY projects have together received more than £25 million of lottery cash in the past two decades.

The figure has been revealed by the National Lottery to mark 20 years since the first draw.

Nearly 500 grants have been handed out to organisations and individuals across the Keighley area.

Biggest winner has been Cliffe Castle Park, which last year was awarded £3.6 million for a massive project to restore the popular site to its Victorian splendour.

Bradford Council submitted the bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund's Parks for People pot for work including a new iron palm house, cafe terrace, re-built animal pens, new glass houses, a vinery, redesigned garden and stage area and the restoration of features such as a fountain and decorative streetlights.

The smallest grant awarded has been £280 to the Aire Valley Vintage Machinery Club, for a commemorative service to mark the 60th anniversary of the Second World War.

And the first payout from the fund was £1,500 for a new court at Keighley Tennis Club.

"In 20 years the National Lottery has helped transform life in Keighley for the better – creating cultural landmarks, empowering communities and developing world class sporting talent," said Jackie O'Sullivan, for the lottery.
