EFFORTS to salvage some form of community safety facility from the impending closure of Haworth Fire Station have not received the backing they deserved, according to a parish councillor.

Councillor Angel Kershaw was commenting in her role as the acting chairman of Haworth, Cross Roads and Stanbury Parish Council on Monday evening. (Nov 24)

The fire station is due to close as a retained facility on December 31 as part of cost-cutting measures. Attempts to keep the premises open gained a two-year stay of execution for the station. But the project was dealt a blow this autumn when Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team and West Yorkshire Police confirmed that they would not be participating in the initiative.

Referring to parish council chairman Coun John Huxley's involvement in the scheme, Coun Kershaw said: "Councillor Huxley has put an awful lot of work into this. People have not stepped up to the plate alongside him.

"Those people know who they are. They may have had good reasons for that, but I don't know."
