A HAWORTH-based environmental group has funding, tools and a plot of land but now "desperately" needs more volunteers.

The Haw-earth project was originally set up to turn previously derelict patches of land into sustainable sources of food.

The project's members want to tidy up and make use of an allotment site on Rawdon Road, but they need people to help clear it up.

Haworth resident and Haw-earth founder Ashna Yates said: "We've had some more funding from the Craven Trust, £500, which we're very pleased with. That was awarded to us last week.

"But when we were putting the drainage into our site we found more rubbish on the land, including old carpets and glass.

"We'd like to clear the rubbish, hire a skip and lay gravel paths and improve the entrance.

"We want to start the clearing work before Christmas and have it done before spring so we can then put raised beds in and start planting.

"We are very short of volunteers because the five main people we had now have jobs and they can only help out in the evenings when its dark. We need people who would be available in the day."

She added she was also interested in hearing from businesses who might be prepared to clear the land as part of a team building exercise. "With just four or five men it could be done in a day," she said.

Anyone willing to get involved can contact Haw-earth via its Twitter or Facebook pages. They can also call 07720 751752 to speak to Mrs Yates.
