A 20-YEAR-OLD from Cononley has completed his transformation from a civilian into a Royal Navy sailor during a 10-week intensive training course at HMS Raleigh in Cornwall.

Communications Technician Ben Brittain undertook a series of physical and mental challenges in order to reach the essential standards required by every member of the Naval Service.

As well as the basics such as marching and fitness sessions, Ben - a former student at Upper Wharfedale School and Craven College - has also learned how to handle an SA80 assault rifle, seamanship techniques and how to tackle floods and fires at sea.

The course culminated in a passing-out-parade attended by families and friends.

Ben, who was a lifeguard before joining the service, said: “I joined the Royal Navy because I wanted an adventurous career full of diverse activities and an exciting life. Training has been tough and sometimes brutal on the body and the mind, but when I think about it I’m going to miss it. Overall I’ve greatly enjoyed my time at Raleigh with the rest of the guys.”

Ben will now head off to HMS Collingwood for specialist training.
