SPECTATORS gathered in Main Street to enjoy the first of this year's Haworth nativity processions.

The first of the annual events, organised by members of Haworth Churches Together, took place in the village's Main Street last Sunday. (Dec 21)

The parade began at the bottom of the street, and featured actors playing the part of Joseph and Mary accompanied by a donkey called Bessie.

Reverend Chris Upton, of West Lane Baptist Church, said: "They walked up the street visiting each pub to find Mary a bed, but none of the pubs had space for them.

"They stopped outside each pub to sing carols and tell the nativity story.

"We ended up at the steps of Haworth Parish Church to sing more carols accompanied by a brass band.

"Bessie the donkey was, as always, provided by Haworth Riding for the Disabled (RDA) and we held a street collection for Haworth RDA during the procession.

"The weather was O.K. – a bit of drizzle but far better than it might have been.

"There were lots of spectators and everyone joined in with singing the carols. We were well supported by tourists and locals."

Joseph and Mary's roles were re-enacted by Molly Upton and Rosa Sargent.

People who missed the occasion have a chance to see a second nativity parade at the same location on Christmas Eve.

This will again begin from the bottom of Main Street at 1pm. All are welcome to attend.
