A HAWORTH man who organised street protests against cuts to public services in Haworth has appeared on national television.

Professional gardener Steve Thorpe was interviewed for the BBC's Sunday Politics programme, which was broadcast last weekend. (Jan 11)

Speaking after his slot was screened, Mr Thorpe said: "They showed me gardening with the kids and explained that I wasn't a politically-minded person.

"They also filmed us marching and interviewed me talking about the cuts.

"I know they were aware that David Cameron had been in Halifax talking about the importance of votes in Yorkshire for this coming General Election.

"I thought the interview went very well, it's keeping the issue in the news, stopping it from fading away and being forgotten and making sure people know what we're doing."

Mr Thorpe, 51, was prompted to arrange the demonstrations in Haworth by the closure of the village's retained fire station. However the protests, attended by dozens of people last month, also opposed other cuts to local public services.
