DEVELOPERS behind plans to build a new supermarket in Silsden are due to meet town councillors this month.

Silvermantle representatives will outline their proposals to councillors before the planning committee meeting on January 22.

Silvermantle’s plan for a 2,709 sq m store with car park and petrol station, on land next to Keighley Road, is due to be discussed by Bradford Council.

The company hoped Bradford planners would discuss its application this month, but the matter has been put back to a future date.

District and town councillor Adrian Naylor said he understood Bradford Council did not want to decide the application until it had spoken to other developers to gain a full picture of all projects planned in the immediate Keighley Road area.

Silvermantle submitted its planning application for the site of the former Becks Mill last year with the intention that Tesco would build the supermarket.

Tesco recently pulled out of the project, but Silvermantle hopes to re-market the site to other major supermarket chains in the future. Planning permission, if approved, will last three years.

A petition against the supermarket plan, organised by Silsden women Wendy Neville and Anna Young, has now attracted 833 signatures.
