THE HISTORIC Red Pig pub in Keighley has been restored to its original state with lottery cash.

The pub is among buildings in Church Street recently refurbished through the Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI).

Specialist builder Paul Whitehead removed white render that had covered the entire front wall for many years.

This revealed the original 18th-century stonework from when the pub was known to Keighley drinkers as The Fountain.

The £2.7 million THI, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Bradford Council, is restoring buildings in North Street, High Street and Church Street to their Victorian and Edwardian appearances.

THI project manager Sue Oakley said the Red Pig, a grade 2 listed building, have been daubed with “unattractive” render in the 1960s.

She said: “We wanted to bring back all the traditional features. Paul cleaned up the stone and re-pointed in lime.”

Bob Brown, who has run the Red Pig for the past 30 years, said: “There was a lot of work, but it’s paid dividends. It’s a lovely job and it’s making a difference to the street.”
