A KEIGHLEY politician has seen first-hand how a town council grant is helping the growth of a community group.

Councillor Andrea Walker visited the Sunflower Allotment Society to see progress on creating a garden area for disabled older people.

The society, formerly Branching Out Keighley, received a grant from Keighley Town Council’s Oak Fund.

Andy Sheppard, from the Welcome project that supports the society, said: “It is made up of older gardeners, some with memory problems, mental health issues or physical disabilities.

“They received £500 to construct an easily-accessible flat area using recycled bins, and to install a hand water pump to enable gardeners to water plants. To see people coming together to grow food and create such a relaxing, friendly environment is fabulous.”
