MOTORISTS 'flying' through a tiny village are putting children's lives at risk, it is claimed.

Campaigner John Collinson is calling for urgent action to cut the speed limit through Oldfield.

He claims it's "ridiculous" that a 20mph restriction doesn't exist on the road, Oldfield Lane.

"Drivers coming out of Oakworth towards the village see a 60mph sign and fly along", said the retired quantity surveyor.

"It appals me what speed they travel at. There is a primary school, yet cars don't slow down.

"Everywhere else you go now there seems to be a 20mph limit outside such schools, so why not in Oldfield?

"It seems most peculiar to me."

Mr Collinson, 67, says he has been raising the issue with councillors for about three years.

"I'm told it's a 'low risk area' and there haven't been any accidents but do we have to see someone killed or seriously injured before action is taken?" he added.

District councillor Glen Miller, whose Worth Valley ward includes OIdfield, says a reduction in the speed limit is on a list of schemes but isn't classed as a priority.

"I'm concerned about all road safety issues but I've not received any other contact from residents or indeed the school regarding the speed of vehicles through Oldfield," he said.

"I am pleased that the 20mph scheme is on the council's list, albeit not as a priority."

Fellow ward councillor Rebecca Poulsen said: "Where accidents occur, schemes are bumped up the priority list. Fortunately there have not been any accidents on Oldfield Lane.

"There is a 30mph speed limit in the area around the school and we have previously requested better signage, but that hasn't happened."

Bradford Council said Oldfield Lane was included on a list of potential schemes for consideration by Keighley Area Committee in April last year, but wasn't chosen.

"Because of more pressing schemes the committee did not select this one for progression this financial year," said a spokesman.

"Funding is extremely limited and the committee is only able to select a small number of schemes from the list to progress each year, often prioritised by accident statistics.

"However we can confirm that Oldfield Lane will be reconsidered for funding in the next financial year."
