I READ with interest the article in this week’s paper – Safety fears fro school children (Keighley News, February 26).

The statement “there is a 30mph speed limit in the area around the school” is absolutely untrue as there is no signage at all to inform motorists of this fact and, therefore, is not legally enforceable.

Approaching Oldfield from all directions, including Oakworth, Stanbury and Laneshire Bridge, the last signage that is displayed is the national speed limit symbol, therefore the legal speed limit in the village of Oldfield is 60mph.

I have heard this argument before and they have stated that because the distance between lampposts in the vicinity of the school is less than 45 metres, then the 30mph speed limit applies. The fact is there are just three lampposts that meet this criteria over the short distance of 60 metres, which does not even cover the entire frontage of the school onto Oldfield Lane. But, as previously stated, without signage the speed limit is not enforceable.

Without signage, nobody who is driving in Oldfield Lane has any knowledge of this so-called fact. if it is a fact. why are there no 30mph signs in the village?

There have been signs erected in both directions in Oldfield Lane in recent years that state ‘Oldfield – villagers welcome careful drivers’. It would have been far more practical to have erected the appropriate speed limit signage.

The bottom line here is the lives of people and children are at risk without the 30 mph signage in place, and this needs to be rectified as soon as possible.
