KRIS Hopkins MP praises charities, councils and voluntary organisations helping the homeless while mentioning the Government has given more than £1 billion towards costs incurred in helping the homeless – MP Praise for charities (Keighley News, January 22).

Has the gentleman not the wit to understand the theory of cause and effect?

It is as a direct result of this Government’s swingeing cuts in public spending that we now have the presence of homeless people being seen as almost the norm in our towns.

Kris Hopkins and the current Government may trumpet their generosity in the fight against homelessness, but they cannot sever the link between their policies and the rising number of homeless families and individuals.

One billion pounds is a pittance when compared to the cost of removing someone’s security, home, family life, sense of dignity and self-respect. Mr Hopkins and his pernicious cohort should hang their heads in shame.
