LOCAL government boss Eric Pickles met Keighley imams during a visit to the town this month.

He sat down with representatives of Keighley’s Asian community to discuss efforts to promote a better understanding of Islam amongst townspeople.

Mr Pickles, the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, was accompanied by Keighley MP Kris Hopkins when he met about 30 people at the Desi Diner.

Owner Shahid Rasool specially opened the North Street eaterie despite the premises being officially closed for refurbishment work.

Mr Hopkins said the event, which included religious leaders from across Bradford district, discussed the Muslim community’s awareness-raising work such as mosque open days, school visits and seminars.

He said: “It is great to hear of the work local imams are doing to break down barriers.

“I am always made to feel welcome when visiting the homes of my Muslim constituents and I’m glad to hear that this generosity has been offered to all the residents of Keighley through successful mosque open days.”

Mr Rasool, whose father Ghulam was also present, said the guests were served a traditional Asian breakfast.

He said: “Eric Pickles was emphasising how much the Muslim community contributes to British values. There was a good turnout and it went quite well.”
